Well, it seems that realizing he wasn't loving was the first step towards learning to love. I know fear can cause me to do sad things. I find that when I am afraid, I sometimes appear indifferent, or flat out "run." I have started a collection of quotes about fear....here's one that would say the person above wasn't loving if he was afraid.
